Through supporting film and art projects, Willow Mixed Media creates stories about a variety of subjects including political, cultural, and environmental issues.
Our Subjects

Over five decades, Willow Mixed Media’s cameras have followed poets and protesters, artists and midwives, power workers and peace activists. Stories about time and place, family, friends, and neighbors.

Support for Willow Mixed Media and its projects has come from the National Endowment for the Arts, the NY State Council on the Arts, the Catskill Watershed Corporation, the Woodstock Chimes Fund, the Experimental TV Center, the Bydale Foundation, the Yip Harburg Foundation, and individual contributors.
Production Services
Willow Mixed Media has provided production services to many public and not-for-profit organizations, including Kingston Hospital, Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Ulster County and Orange–Ulster BOCES, Scenic Hudson, the Vanaver Caravan, Atlanta Ballet, the Empire State Railway Museum, the Greyston Foundation, and BBC-TV, London.
Recognition & Beyond
“Sun As Source,” a major show of solar art both as art and functional heating materials, was included in exhibition sites such as the 1982 World’s Fair in Knoxville, TN.
Additional projects include: Will Our Children Thank Us with Dr. Benjamin Spock & Outdoors Across America — a show of public art on billboards in selected urban and rural sites — and the Clearwater Education Project.

Behind the Camera
Founded by Tobe Carey
Willow Mixed Media was founded in 1979 by filmmaker Tobe Carey. We’re proud to present this collection of films from the past 60 years. From projects starting on 16mm and Sony PortaPak up to the 4K and AI videos of today, these titles showcase the changing formats throughout video history. With films across a wide range of subjects, some told through a verite approach, others through intimate discussions or experimental approaches, in addition to in-depth interview-based local history and political documentaries, there’s something for everyone! When not making films, you’ll find Tobe tending to the garden.
